2012 Wells Fargo Championship – Webb Simpson and the Magnificent Seven

At the end of the third round of play at the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club, seven players were -11 or better. Just for today I call them the Magnificent Seven.

How to Break 90 – Guaranteed!

The Magnificent Seven

I predict that one of the magnificent seven will end up winning the Championship tomorrow. The group includes both ambitious young guns seeking to make a name for themselves, and players a bit older who have been on tour for while and are hungry for a win. Of course, there are plenty of other players, just below the -11 mark who could a move tomorrow. It will be exciting.

The magnificent seven includes Webb Simpson who is leading (-14), Ryan Moore (-13), D.A. Points (-13), Rory McIlroy (-12), Nick Watney (-13), Rickie Fowler (-12), and Stewart Cink (-11).

The group includes the young guns in the PGA Tour. Here they are in order of youngest to oldest: McIlroy (23), Fowler (23), Simpson (26), Moore (29), Watney (31), Points (35), and Cink (38.11).

Rory McIlroy — 5’10” tall, 160 pounds — was second in driving distance for the three rounds averaging 332 yards. He is the phenom from Northern Ireland who won the 2010 Wells Fargo Classic at age 21. Only two off the lead, Rory is the player to watch tomorrow. He seems in his zone now.
